Our Risk Reality Calculator gives a guide of something happening to someone up to a certain age. It doesn’t reflect the chances of something happening to someone at any given point in time. It’s generally accepted the older you get, the higher the chance of something happening to you which would stop you from being able to work.
The statistics used by the Risk Reality Calculator are based on a large number of people and give a reasonable guide to the average likelihood of one of the described events happening. However, we also recognise that everyone is unique, so the results should be used as a rough guide and preferably talked through with a qualified financial adviser.
The results give the probability of any one of the three described events happening between your current age and the planned retirement age you’ve selected on the calculator (between ages 55 - 70). The later you retire, the higher the chance of something happening, and this will be reflected in the calculator results.
The results are given separately for each person, as well as a combination if two people are included. For the combined results for two people, the probabilities for each person are based on different periods of time, depending on their current age and the retirement age they’ve selected on the calculator. It’s assumed that the chances of something happening to each life are not linked (the lives are independent).
Chances of being unable to work for 2 months or more
These probabilities have been calculated using our own interpretation of industry statistics, combined with our experience of LV= income protection business sold, assuming a two month waiting period and a typical occupation.
Chances of suffering a serious illness
These probabilities are based on the rates of a critical illness occurring, published by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Continuous Mortality Investigation ('08' series accelerated critical illness morbidity tables). These rates were adjusted to be applicable for standalone critical illness, based on a comparison of market experience and published morbidity tables. Using these standard rates and based on our own experience, we have also adjusted them to be applicable to the general population, which also includes people who do not have insurance policies.
Chances of death
These probabilities are based on mortality tables published by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Continuous Mortality Investigation ('08' series assured lives mortality tables). The industry rates are projected to apply to a population of insured individuals - those people who have life insurance policies.
Combined results
These results look at the probability of any one of the three above events happening before the chosen retirement age. The results can be viewed separately for each person, or as a combination for a couple, based on the industry and population results above.

How would you cope financially?
The average individual income protection claim is paid for 5 years, 3 months* which could mean
you're out of pocket for a significant time with no income to rely on.
And even if you are eligible for state benefits, it's very unlikely to cover all your weekly bills and living expenses.
Your back-up plan
If you're unable to work, making sure you continue to receive a regular monthly income
is essential if you want to maintain your lifestyle with as little disruption as possible.
Talk to your Mortgage Advice Brokerage adviser about the financial protection you'd like to put in place.
One option is income protection which pays you a regular monthly amount,

to help you get back on your feet and adapt to life ahead without the financial worry.
Your back-up plan
A little peace of mind goes a long way when you're dealing with a diagnosis and treatment plan.
The road ahead may be uncertain, but putting some financial protection in place will make getting
to appointments, recuperating in your own time and dealing with everyday bills easier.
And it eases life for your partner too, knowing that your finances are sorted.
Critical illness cover provides a one-off lump sum payment on diagnosis of one of a number

How would you cope financially?
It's never easy to think about what would happen if you, or your partner, were to die early.
But thinking about how your partner and/or your dependants would cope
financially and pay the bills without your regular income brings life sharply into focus.
Your back-up plan
Life insurance is really important if you have dependants who rely on you
financially. So, would a one-off larger pot of money most help those you leave behind?
Or maybe a combination of a one-off smaller pot and a regular income?
Whichever you choose, you'll have the peace of mind that if tragedy did strike,
your dependants would be more comfortable financially.

The state may help a bit - but not enough and not for long.
The good news is that the state will give you £109.40* a week for up to 28 weeks if you can't work due to ill health.
But not everyone is eligible for Statutory Sick Pay - it's only available for people who are employed,
and Tax and National Insurance are still deducted from your payments.
For full details on the state benefits available to you, go to www.gov.uk.
The bad news in the financial year ending in April 2021 the average UK family was spending £69.20** a week on food alone.
That doesn't leave much for all your other monthly expenses.
The figures used don't take into account any temporary
or short-term changes to state benefits.

The sooner you get protection the less your monthly premiums will be. Delaying taking out cover could mean you end up paying more in total for protection over your life time.
For example, £100,000 of life cover until a chosen retirement age of 66, would cost a 30 year old, non-smoker only around £8.00 per month1, a 40 year old non-smoker would pay around £11.00 per month2, and a 50 year old non-smoker would pay around £18.00 per month3 for the same cover.
£8.00 a month
30 year old, non-smoker
£11.00 a month
40 year old, non-smoker
£18.00 a month
50 year old, non-smoker
The earlier you take out cover, the more likely you are to pay a lower monthly premium,
but you'll also be covered for a lot longer.
The amount you pay for your cover will depend on your personal circumstances and prices at the time.
1 Based on a non-smoker, Level cover, policy term 36 years
2 Based on a non-smoker, Level cover, policy term 26 years
3 Based on a non-smoker, Level cover, policy term 16 years
Just compare the cost of cover with a few monthly treats.
You'll soon see that protection is actually really good value.
And you can't say that about many things these days.
You may be pleasantly surprised how little you need to pay to put some cover in place.
What do you get for around...
£9 a month?
Monthly subscription to a live TV streaming service
or £100,000 of Life cover1
£20 a month?
A large takeaway pizza
or £1,000 of monthly Income Protection2
£30 a month?
Imax Cinema for 2
or £75,000 of Combined Life & Enhanced Critical Illness cover3
The amount you pay will depend on your personal circumstances and prices at the time
1 Based on a single person, aged 35, non-smoker, Level cover, policy term 30 years
2 Based on a single person, aged 30, non-smoker, waiting period of 6 months, index-linked cover, terminating at 65
3 Based on a single person, aged 35, non-smoker, Level cover, policy term 20 years
As an industry, insurers want to make it as simple and easy as possible for their customers to claim.
In 2021:
Help insurers to help you
Usually the only claims not paid are those where someone is insured without the insurer having full knowledge of a relevant medical condition.
So, one of the ways in which you can help us to help you, is to make sure you fully share the medical information asked for,
when you apply for a protection product.
Financial protection really can help to make a real difference to people's lives at some of the most difficult of times.

If you're not bringing home the bacon, how long will your savings last?
Even large amounts of savings can vanish in a matter of weeks if you lose your income.
And that would be even more painful if you'd hoped to spend that money on the good things in life like a new car or holiday.

About LV=
LV= have been helping people to protect their finances for over 170 years. Right from the start they set out to help provide people with greater financial security, and for many, this simply meant being able to provide their loved ones with a decent burial.
Today, although times have changed, their purpose is very similar. As a leading mutual they look after over 1.1 million members and are committed to providing them with quality financial protection when they need it most.
So, whatever a person's protection needs - to cover their income, life, or a serious illness, LV= can provide the quality protection they need.
The Risk Reality Calculator story
'The Risk Reality Calculator helps raise people's awareness.. let alone think about the financial protection one might need. So, LV= created the Risk Reality Calculator to help raise people's awareness of the need for financial protection in an easy, clear and immediate way.
The calculator quantifies a person's risks based on four personal details and the results really help to bring reality home. Appreciating none of us know what lies ahead, LV= want to encourage more people to put a financial back-up plan in place now - as it could make all the difference to that person's (and their loved ones) future financial security.
And it’s gaining wider recognition too, being regularly featured in the press and winning both the award for innovation at the Cover 2014 awards and the award for Innovation in Sales Technology at BESMA (British Excellence in Sales Management Awards) 2017.
